Title: Momentary Bliss
Author: Rein Kishuku
Rating: Maybe PG?
Summary: Joy is a myth carried in whispers, in mournful looks at Hylians and Gorons and all those free to live unbound by that singular truth, that single existence.
Being a Sheikah means being a sacrifice.
It is old knowledge, something which passes from generation to generation, never deeply considered until its meaning becomes relevant again, yet somehow the foundation of Sheikah life. Contentment is fleeting, happiness elusive. Joy is a myth carried in whispers, in mournful looks at Hylians and Gorons and all those free to live unbound by that singular truth, that single existence.
Duty is life; all else that might come unexpectedly is to be cast aside.
Even when only two remained, that truth was carried on. Even when Impa cast herself aside, destined to spend her existence in a world few knew existed, a world necessary for the peace and safety of Hyrule, it could not be denied. She had fulfilled her duty to its fullest extent, giving her life in the way deemed most honorable by the elders who have long since left the world behind them.
But her sacrifice was not difficult. Honorable, courageous, but never difficult. Impa knew what she had to do and gladly did it.
It is not so easy for Sheik.
He knows what he must do, and in this final hour is prepared to do it. Link cannot see him presently, though he is clearly awaiting the message, the meaning, the instruction that only the Sheikah can give him. The Hero is waiting and watching, maybe wondering, and Sheik only wishes he could see into the man’s mind and give him precisely what he wants.
Sheik swallows, wondering himself what he wants.
The temple of time seems duller today, less holy. A small ray of sun bounces off a smudge on Link’s sword, flashing towards the alter. Sheik bounds down from his perch at last, landing deftly before the Hero before he even realizes anyone has moved.
When their eyes meet, relief spreads over Link’s face. Sheik can hardly process it, watching a small smile suddenly appear on the exhausted Hero’s face, and his eyes, filled with captivation, beat an unsaid message into the Sheikah. His heart stops.
He explains of the legend, voice steady, of the three parts of the Triforce. He tells the young Hylian of his role, of his courage. He tells of the seventh sage, displays the back of his hand where the Triforce of Wisdom shines, and he blinds the young man just long enough for Zelda to take his place as he sits upon the roof, not listening, not wanting to. His heart is only just beginning to beat again.
That mythical feeling of joy – suddenly he knows it. It is all through his body, filling him, making his heart beat wildly in his chest. His eyes.
But he knows he will never see them again, and that wondrous feeling leaves him, replaced by an ache unlike anything he has ever know, more grief than he ever knew was possible.
Finally, he leaps, the princess’s orders to leave Hyrule forever echoing in his head and his heart. And finally, he understands what it means to be a sacrifice.
